From “Symphony” to “Midnight Sun,” Zara Larsson just keeps the hits coming.
Zara Larsson, the 27-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter, is taking the world by storm once again with her latest single, “Midnight Sun.” But let’s be honest, Zara Larsson is no stranger to virality. She’s been serving us absolute pop masterpieces since 2015 with hits like “Never Forget You” and “Lush Life.” (And if you’re sitting there thinking, “I don’t know those songs,” please do yourself a favor and go listen. I almost guarantee you’ve heard them more than once in your life).
Right now, Zara has just finished touring with Tate McRae on the Miss Possessive World Tour, and from every video I’ve seen, she is absolutely blowing crowds away. There’s something electric about watching her perform, especially when she sings “Midnight Sun.” Her stage presence paired with that voice? Unreal. Jaw-dropping.
Now, let’s talk about the song itself because it deserves every single flower it’s been getting. Listening to “Midnight Sun” feels like stepping into a synth-filled dream, like someone threw a party inside a synthesizer and invited you as the guest of honor. It is the embodiment of summer; Hot Girl Summer, to be specific. The production is bright, bold, and just a little bit intoxicating, perfectly complementing Zara’s vocals, which are not only flawless on the track but, from the live clips I’ve seen, somehow even better in person. How is it possible to sound that good live?! My brain simply cannot comprehend it.
Lyrically, the song captures that magical, dizzying feeling of falling for someone under the heat of summer, the kind of love that feels like it could outlast the season even if you know deep down it might not. When she says, “Summer isn’t over yet,” it’s like she’s convincing herself that this fling could become something more, that the magic of the midnight sun might carry them past the summer season. It’s dreamy, euphoric, and just a little bit delusional in the best possible way.
Sure, maybe I’m reading into this song too much, but what’s a song review if not me pulling stories and meaning out of funky beats and addicting melodies? “Midnight Sun” is catchy, vibey, and everything I want from a late-summer anthem.
Zara Larsson is truly a force to be reckoned with, and, I fear, her new album Midnight Sun, OUT NOW, is good, really good. Clear your schedules, grab your friends, hop in the car, and BLAST Midnight Sun!
