On April 23, Genevieve Stokes opened up the night at MGM Music Hall with a mesmerizing and heartfelt set ahead of Role Model’s headlining performance. Known for her touching lyrics and delicate, piano-driven sound, Genevieve first made waves in 2021 with her debut EP Swimming Lessons. In 2022, she gained widespread attention on social media for her breakout song “Habits,” catching the world by storm and for good reason.

After a long drive, I was welcomed into the venue, MGM Music Hall with warm energy from both the staff and fans. I had been listening to both Genevieve and Role Model’s music all day, which made finally stepping inside feel even more surreal. I’ve been a fan of Genevieve for a while now; “Habits” was on repeat for me for months, so having the opportunity to photograph her set felt incredibly special.

As the clock approached 8:00, anticipation filled the air. I entered the photo pit just as the house lights dimmed and the stage lit up. I hadn’t been in a pit in longer than I’d like to admit, but the moment I stepped in, it felt like coming home. Genevieve’s band took the stage first, consisting of a bass guitarist and a drummer. The crowd erupted with cheers, and only grew louder as Genevieve herself walked out.

Without a word, she went straight to her keyboard and began to play. I was immediately entranced. Her vocals are uniquely enchanting. There’s something addictive about the tone and delivery that completely draws you in. Hearing them live, layered with the fullness of her band, was truly heavenly. I spent the first song soaking it all in—her incredible stage presence, the way fans sang with full hearts, and even those just discovering her music swaying and smiling along.

She followed with what ended up being my favorite song of the night, “Dreamer.” On the studio version, the drums are subtle but essential, but hearing them live, feeling them deep in my chest, gave the song an entirely new dimension. It reminded me just how special live music is. Concerts are these rare, beautiful moments to escape from reality, surrounded by people who love music just as much as you do. That night, Genevieve’s set felt like one of those magical escapes.

Before I knew it, she was giving her final thank yous to her band, to Role Model for having her, and to the crowd for their incredible energy. She closed the night with her hit song “Habits,” and the entire venue lit up, both in sound and in light. Phones rose in the air with flashlights illuminating the room, almost like stars sparkling in the night sky. It was a bittersweet moment, full of connection and gratitude. Watching everyone sing along, I was overwhelmed in the best way.

There are no words that can fully capture how incredible Genevieve’s performance was. If you haven’t seen her live, I can’t recommend it enough. Add her to your list of artists to see in your lifetime. From her stunning vocals to the intimate presence of her band, she delivers a performance you’ll carry with you long after the night ends. If you’re a fan of artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine, or Role Model, Genevieve Stokes is someone you must have in your rotation.
